    Libraries that include picture books to promote literacy to young readers are boosting beginner-level vocabulary skills, introducing sentence structure and developing story analysis. See if students can point out letters and words they know on the recipe or instruction sheet. The emphasis in the writing activities in Building Language for Literacy is to provide opportunities for children to recognize different functional uses for writing and drawing.

Building Language Skills — When reading through picture books during story time, at home or in the classroom, children can practice sounding out the language while adults introduce and explain new and interesting words.

For example, when playing "school," children start using longer and more complex sentences when they act out the role of the teacher or the librarian, incorporating in their speech the words and expressions that they do not use if they play "students.
