He was, of course, a powerhouse pouring forth poetry, and his prodigious memory, not to be confused with his forgetfulness, could at the drop of a hat recreate, or more correctly rewrite, the missing verses. Chesterton Volume 21 This volume contains Chesterton's commentaries and reflections on what he saw on his travels in America and Rome, plus an appendix on how America saw Chesterton. Having come to doubt whether humanity can be combined with progress, most people, easily pleased, would have elected to abandon progress and remain with humanity. Chesterton was the poet of the ordinary, denying that anything was or could be uninteresting; his verse celebrates lamp-posts and daisies and railway stations.

He did much of his writing in train stations, since he usually missed the train he was supposed to catch. Chesterton was equally at ease with literary and social criticism, history, politics, economics, philosophy, and theology.

Lecture 51: The Collected Poems

He did, indeed, fall back on fundamental things, on a fury at the oppression of the poor, on a pity for slaves, and especially for contented slaves. Chesterton is often called the most quoted man in English; he was certainly one of the most prolific.
